marathon man

last sunday was the nyc marathon.

before i moved here, i couldn't give a crap about marathons. watching them on television is about as much fun as staring at a rock.

then one day i watched the hordes of runners stream through my neighborhood and i was amazed at how badass it was. there is just something truly remarkable about seeing all of these people, most of whom don't look like athletes, trying to complete the monumental task of running 26 miles. to make it even better, thousands of people line the streets and cheer on these strangers. it's like a city-wide block party, with folks sitting on their stoops and rooftops drinking beer and bbq-ing.

the best part for me is that the race literally runs through my neighborhood so i don't have to go very far in order to watch it.

here's one of the many bands that set up along the way to play for the runners. readers, meet the 'shankbone mystic project'...probably THE worst named band on the planet. oh well, they were trying...

every year i make it a point to watch pretty much the entire race, from the leaders to the stragglers. this year, like an idiot, i was too slow getting out of my house. i missed the women leaders. crap.

here are the men though. it's almost like these guys are sprinting. it's INSANE. and this is at about mile 12...

i watched from bedford avenue in williamsburg this year (actually every year). look at all of these goddamn people! and they just keep coming forever. it's insane. after looking at the runners for a while and seeing their names on their shirts and screaming, "GO DANIEL!!" and then immediately finding the next name and yelling that, i start to get motion sickness. it is so nuts. i guess it's like staring at a river. except that this river is made up of sweaty people.

after about two hours, i decided to head to my studio to work for the rest of the day. along the way, i crossed one of the hydrating stations where the runners get there gatorade or water or whatever.

look at all of those cups! jesus.

here's a closeup.

anyhoo, if you ever get a chance to watch one of these things, you should. it's the best. and if you ever actually run in one, you are my hero. hey todd didn't you run a half marathon earlier this year? keep on truckin'....(god that was awful. sorry!)
