greenpoint blues
so things are sad in my neighborhood these days.
the part of brooklyn that i live in is called greenpoint and it's mostly made up of Polish folks. basically, it's the center of Polish catholicism in nyc.
right down at the end of my block is this big catholic church. the square in front of the church is called "Pope John Paul II Square" and this statue of the pope is there. people have been leaving flowers and candles there since he died. i happened to be at home when the vatican announced this and right afterwards the church started ringing it's bells (for about half an hour).
almost every business that i walk by has a picture of him taped to the front door too.
even though i'm not catholic (but i am part Polish), it's all pretty touching i think.

The Pope died 30 minutes before my wedding and we didn't know until the Priest got a piece of paper delivered to him right after we walked down the aisle and he announced it to us all. The wedding ended at 3pm, the same time all the church bells in Houston tolled in his memory. Wow. -Alese
