my commute
interested in seeing a typical day of commuting here in nyc? no? well tough crap.
here we go:
in most cities, when you have a job you have a time when you have to be there in the morning. let's say you start at 9am...then you should typically find yourself in your workplace by, oh, say 9am. it makes sense right? well, one of the things about this town (and i am guessing most other bigger ones) is that being-on-time-liness doesn't seem all that important. this commute is a fine example of that. i should be in the office by 9am, so naturally what time do i leave my apartment in brooklyn?
yep, 9:00 on the dot. now don't get me wrong, i used to be on time ALL the time. after a while though, i slowly adjusted my inner clock to synch up with my co-workers. here's the corner of my block:
once i round this corner, i have about a 6 block walk to the subway:
i sort of have it down so that i get to the train right as it is arriving. sometimes, like today, i miss that train and have to wait for the next one. today it took FOREVER. here's me waiting:
to pass the time while waiting for the train, you can read, listen to music, read the graffitti-covered movie posters, or look at cute girls. OR you can stare down into the brown nasty abyss of the rails and watch rats and mice go about their day:
ok, here comes the G train!
i wanted to take photos of my co-travellers inside of the train, but i always feel like it's sort of a rude thing to be doing right away in the morning. anyways, i take the G three stops up into the lovely borough of Queens and then i have to get out and switch to another train. the V train. here's the transfer at Court Square:
you have to walk down this long hallway that is usually crammed full of people. today i was ahead of the pack so it wasn't so bad. hey look! here comes the V:
once on the V, it's three stops until i get to Rockefeller Center in Manhattan:
most every morning, you see the same people riding the trains with you. here is one of them...my friend lucy. she's reading one of the free newspapers that are given out to us commuters. "Great shoes, crappy politics"...i wish i could have read that story.
anyways, there is an underground entrance into my building. after that, it's just a quick elevator ride up to my floor:
then i get a coffee and a water, and head to my desk. arrival time: 9:39:
usually it takes about 30 minutes. better luck tomorrow i guess...

The Sun shines on diamond street. Nice neighborhood chony. Thats how british people pronounce tony. just like when they say tuna...chuna. chuesday.....
Anyways I love subway travel. The smells, the rush of air just before the train, the mice, psychoanalazing fellow travlers. Good times.
david

ha ha ha...thanks guys. larry you go on saying awesome as much as you want. you give it that certain flair. eide, will you make me a tape of various british folk saying tony? (esp cute girls) i want to test your theory.
Utterly fascinating! I loved your commute photos. N.Y. seems a very dirty and interesting place. Someday I'll visit and you can show me all the rats and mice and then show me all the cool old dirty biuldings. I think the history is neat even if the biuldings are falling apart. Do you sometime feel like Maxwell Smart or one of the Thunderbirds characters because you have a below ground elevator entrance? I would!
